For the past few months, I have been training for Slo Ultra‘s Wild Cherry Run. They have a 50 mile, 26 mile, 13 mile and 5 mile runs/walk on a private property trail. I originally heard about the race through a coworker, and I was intrigued to the race about a month and a half before. I would go walk Islay Hill at lunch time since the incline seemed similar on the perfectly on my lunch break. I would get half way in 20 minutes at a good speed. Johnson in the evening I clocked in at 45 minutes for 3 miles. Even doing that before, it did not prepare me for the actual race.
I took a couple weeks off because my feet were hurting and my back was killing me. I wanted a rest, and that probably was a bad idea. At the same time, I didn’t want to be injured for the race/walk itself. The day kept getting closer and I started getting more anxiety about it. Friday I went to pick up the packet during lunch time. It was getting more real. I was talking to my coworker and mentioned that finishing I was going to buy myself one thing. However, if I make my goal time of 2 hours I will buy myself a few things. It’s the motivation.
Friday ended up being a god awful day. It was hard not to want to have a big drink and call it a night. I am so glad I didn’t have the Hurricane like I originally wanted to. I knew I was going to have the race in the morning and I wasn’t going to be stupid. I tried to get in the zone that night. Not think about what happened at work and focus on what was going to happen tomorrow. A lot of help came from Power Workout playlist on Spotify. A lot of good motivational music on own workout playlist. I still might for the next coming months.
The race finally arrived.
I got up early. I didn’t have to report until 9:30 for the race, but I got there around 7:40. I wanted to get there early so I wouldn’t have to deal with the parking hassle. It was well organised. Parking was sectioned off, and there wasn’t a shortage of spots especially with a race of 1,000 people + spectators. They also provided a shuttle service as well, so you didn’t have to walk if you didn’t feel like it.
Now the race was crazy and beautiful at the same time. The first hill alone kicked my butt to the floor. I didn’t rush and encouragement on the trail. Also, there is no excuses for exercising. One lady was walking with a broken foot. There was an 80-year-old running the 50 mile. It was motivation. The views were amazing once you hit the 3-4 mile mark.
I did get discourage a few times, but I trucked through. I did finish the race. The bonus? I managed to finish the race in 2 hours! Maybe less because we started later. I was quite proud of myself for one, finishing, and two making my time.
I still haven’t decided what I am going to treat myself to. I have been on a book, Funko and pen buying band. I was going to buy all three for making the 2 hour mark. If it was over, I would only buy one. I went out after the race and didn’t find anything that strikes my fancy. So I will think about it.
I would do this race/walk again. It was worth the struggle.
